Care Worker Visa Closure — What the 2025-2028 Transition Means for You

The closure applies specifically to new entry clearance applications — that is, applications made by people currently outside the UK who have never held a Care Worker or Senior Care Worker visa before. If you are outside the UK and have not previously worked under one of these codes, you cannot be sponsored into a fresh Care Worker or Senior Care Worker role, regardless of the employer's licence status or the salary on offer.

The closure does not affect other health and care occupations. Registered nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals sponsored under the Health and Care Worker visa route are unaffected and remain fully sponsorable, both from overseas and in-country.

There is a transition period running until 22 July 2028. If you already held a Care Worker or Senior Care Worker visa before the closure date, you can, during this transition period, switch to a new sponsor if your current employer's circumstances change, or extend/renew your visa with your existing or a new sponsor. You do not need to leave the UK or restart your visa journey because of this change.

Keep records of your original CoS and visa grant date, since sponsors and caseworkers may need to confirm you were already in a sponsored role before the closure date when you switch or renew.

People already in the UK on another visa — such as a Student or Graduate visa — can still switch into a Care Worker or Senior Care Worker role during the transition period. However, there is an important condition: you must have already been legally employed by the care provider for at least three months before a Certificate of Sponsorship can be assigned to you.

In practice, this usually means working for the care provider in another capacity (or in a role that does not itself require sponsorship) for the qualifying period before your employer can move you onto a Care Worker or Senior Care Worker CoS. This route is only open to people already in the UK — it does not create a new overseas entry route.

If none of the above applies to you — you have never held one of these visas and you are not currently living and working in the UK — a fresh Care Worker or Senior Care Worker application is not available to you under current rules. This applies no matter how the job is advertised, how experienced you are, or what the employer tells you.

If your background is in nursing, allied health, or another regulated healthcare profession, check whether your role would instead fall under the Health and Care Worker visa route, which remains open. If your experience is specifically in direct care work, it is worth focusing your search on other Skilled Worker eligible occupations instead, since this specific route is not realistically available to you as a first-time overseas applicant.

Because this change is relatively recent, many older job adverts, sponsor lists, and even some agencies have not been updated to reflect it. An advert that says 'visa sponsorship available' for a care worker role may simply be outdated, or may not have been checked against the current rules.

Be especially wary of anyone — an agency, a 'recruiter', or an individual — who claims they can arrange a Care Worker visa for a new overseas applicant for a fee. This is not something that can legitimately be arranged for someone who does not qualify under the transition rules above, and paying for a promise like this carries serious financial risk.
